Uniview NVR301-08S3 8CH 4K NVR

The Uniview NVR301-08S3 8CH 4K NVR is the recorder that sits at the centre of a small IP camera system. It accepts up to eight IP cameras, which suits a house, an office floor or a mid-sized shop that runs six or seven cameras today and wants room for one or two more later.

Where the footage lives is the first thing to plan. This 8 Channel NVR has one SATA bay and supports a hard disk of up to 10 TB. The disk is not supplied inside the box, so choose its size from the number of cameras, their resolution and how many days of history you want to keep. Recording resolution runs from 8MP down to CIF, incoming bandwidth is 64 Mbps and outgoing bandwidth is 48 Mbps, and all eight channels can be played back at the same time while recording continues.

Camera compatibility is the second question. As an ONVIF NVR it works with mainstream cameras conforming to ONVIF Profile S, Profile G and Profile T as well as the RTSP protocol, so IP cameras already installed on site can usually be added rather than replaced. Uniview cameras connect natively, and smart functions such as face detection, intrusion detection, cross line detection and ultra motion detection are carried through from the cameras.

One point to confirm before ordering this Uniview NVR: the NVR301-08S3 has no built-in PoE ports, so each camera needs power from its own adapter or from a separate PoE switch, and only the network run comes back to the recorder. For viewing, this 4K Network Video Recorder gives one HDMI output at up to 4K (3840 × 2160) and one VGA output at up to 1920 × 1080, and both work at the same time; live view splits into 1/4/6/8/9 screens. Up to 128 remote users can connect, so family or staff can watch from different places at once. It draws under 5 W without a disk and runs on DC 12V/2A.

Important Usage Instructions

• Fit a SATA hard disk before first use — the recorder cannot store footage without one, and it supports up to 10 TB.
• Remember there are no PoE ports on this model; power each camera from an adapter or a PoE switch and run only the network cable to the recorder.
• Keep the unit in a ventilated, dust-free place between -10°C and 55°C, and never stack anything on top of it.
• Use a UPS or voltage protector — sudden power cuts during writing are the most common cause of a corrupted recording disk.
• Change the default password on first login and check the recording schedule and retention days after installation.
