Cast iron is heavy and it holds heat. A cast iron burner head takes a few seconds longer to come up to temperature than a thin pressed one, then keeps the flame steady when a cold pot lands on it — the flame does not dip the way it does on a light burner. It also survives what actually kills burner heads in a Bangladeshi kitchen: boiled-over dal, salt, and being scrubbed every week. Both heads are 100 mm and rated 3.0 kW, so the two sides behave identically and you never have to remember which one is the strong one.

Around the burners the build is stainless steel — panel, frame and burner support bar — which is why the stove weighs 4.2 Kg and still wipes clean after a spill. The pan support is zigzag nickel electroplated with a locking system, and Walton ships a free small pan support in the box. That small ring matters more than it sounds: a kettle, a small milk pan or a single-cup tea pot tips on a full-size support, and this is the accessory most people end up buying separately.

What 3.0 kW costs you in gas

A useful rule: LPG carries roughly 13.8 kWh of energy per kilogram. A 3.0 kW burner at full flame therefore draws about 0.22 kg of gas per hour — so a 12 kg cylinder gives roughly 55 hours of one burner running flat out, and far more in real cooking, because you drop the flame once the pot boils. Thermal efficiency above 65% means most of that energy reaches the pot instead of escaping around it. The two biggest wasters are a yellow flame and a pot narrower than the flame ring.

Living with cast iron burners

• Dry the burner heads properly after washing. Cast iron will surface-rust if it sits wet overnight — a quick wipe and two minutes on a low flame fixes that for good.
• Do not soak them. Wipe with a damp cloth, use baking soda paste on burnt-on food, and skip harsh acid cleaners.
• Keep the port holes clear. A blocked port is what turns a blue flame yellow and sooty.
• Seat the head back in its groove after cleaning — a head sitting crooked will not catch the spark.
• Check the rubber hose and regulator every couple of years, and close the cylinder valve when the kitchen is left empty for a long stretch.
